On Monday, August 29th, Luminalt’s CEO Jeanine Cotter presented to Solar Richmond’s Women’s Solar Training course. Solar Richmond, a workforce development training center located in Richmond, CA, seeks to provide training for green collar jobs to low-income and underemployed individuals throughout the East Bay. Michele McGeoy, Solar Richmond’s founder and executive director, invited Jeanine to speak to a classroom full of women solar trainees specifically about the process of installing solar, as well as some of the obstacles of being a woman in a male-dominated field. As one of the few women in solar, or construction for that matter, Jeanine is an outspoken advocate for the inclusion of women in solar hiring programs, particularly those supported by the government. At Luminalt, women fill a wide range of roles, from executive and engineering positions, to installers and solar analysts.
Filmmaker Shalini Kantayya filmed Jeanine’s talk for inclusion in her upcoming documentary on America’s green collar workforce.
Jeanine discusses the process of installing solar, while also talking about the specific challenges women face in a male-dominated industry.
