Luminalt draws more than half of its installers from local workforce development programs. Jeanine Cotter, Luminalt’s CEO and a member of the Mayor’s Solar Task Force, was instrumental in making hiring programs part of access to San Francisco’sGoSolarSF funds. Asian Neighborhood Design is one of several training programs that Luminalt hires from, drawing the best and brightest of graduating classes.

Luminalt installer Lalo Rangel, a graduate of Asian Neighborhood Design’s green building training program, returned to Asian Neighborhood Design in a new capacity: as teacher. Lalo worked with Asian Neighborhood Design’s John Cothran to teach him up to date techniques for wiring inverters, all on equipment donated by Luminalt.

The ongoing partnership between Asian Neighborhood Design and Luminalt beautifully illustrates that local enterprises can give back to the community in concrete ways and that green collar jobs are a booming sector of the workforce. As a young and rapidly growing industry, solar has the potential to bring a more diverse group of people into the broader conversation on environmental sustainability and socially responsible businesses.
