Luminalt’s Janaye Adams traveled to Sacramento yesterday, May 16th, to lobby for an increase in the State’s net metering cap. What is net metering?
From Vote Solar:
Policies like net energy metering have made California our nation’s solar leader. Like roll over minutes on your cell phone bill, net energy metering allows a customer’s electric meter to “spin backwards” ensuring that they receive fair credit for any electricity that they put back on the grid rather than using themselves. Now in place in 43 other states nationwide, it’s one of the most important policy tools we have for supporting customer investment in solar & other small-scale renewable resources.
Currently, utilities in California must purchase up to 5% of their peak loadfrom solar producers. If California is to reach its goal of installing 3,000 megawatts of rooftop solar, it is vital that the legislature increase the cap. Net metering has no impact on the electrical rates of utility customers. If anything, solar is producing power during the middle of the day, during peak demand, lessening the need for coal-burning peaker plants to meet demand.
